Navy senior Ryan Speir was named the 2016 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday. Speir and classmate Sam Williams were also placed on the academic all-league squad.

Returning back to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1997, the Navy men’s cross country team finished 26th out of 31 teams on Saturday at Indiana State’s LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

For the first time since 1997, the Navy men’s cross country team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship following a second-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional meet on Saturday at University Park, Pennsylvania.
